Single-Level Fusion in Flexion-Distraction Injury

Abstract
We report a case of a patient with flexion-distraction injury of the L2 vertebra treated with a combination of single-level pedicle screw fixation and posterior fusion. The patient, a 27-year-old male, was admitted for severe lower back pain after a fall-related injury. Imaging studies showed a compression fracture at the L2 vertebra, with disruption of the posterior spinal ligaments. The patient had no neurologic deficits. Surgical intervention was performed to simultaneously address restoration of the posterior tension band and segmental kyphosis. After L1-2 pedicle screw fixation with posterior fusion, the patient's preoperative symptoms were improved, and he was discharged without severe complications. Single-level fusion seems to play a promising role in thoraco-lumbar flexion-distraction injuries. However, further long-term follow-up studies involving larger populations will be required.
